At the end of 18th century Poland was partitioned, its territories annexed by nearby empires. But at the end of WWI Russia bowed out of the war, while Austria-Hungary and Germany capitulated. It allowed Poland to regain its freedom in 1918 — and it celebrates its Independence Day on November 11th, the anniversary of the end of World War I.
